The amazing people of Wake County Public School System (WCPSS), in North Carolina, have been hosting their Letterland Day at Pullen Park for 6 years now. We were astounded to hear that an estimated 14,000 people attended this year! Read on to find out more about this brilliant day.

With the partnership of City of Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources, Sinclair Broadcasting and Wake Up and Read, WCPSS put on an event that is completely free to the public, meaning anyone can join in with the Letterland fun. Every year, families and school groups travel from all over North Carolina, and even Virginia (trust us, it's worth the journey) to attend this special event.

This day provides the children, who have been working hard in their Letterland lessons all year, a reward - meeting their beloved Letterlanders!

'My children and I look forward to attending Letterland Day at Pullen Park every year. It is so well organized, we never have to wait to enjoy the activities and they love seeing their favorite Letterland characters come to life'

- Beth Dabney

The Activities

Throughout the day, WCPSS puts on loads of exciting activities and performances that kids (and adults) can enjoy. Even better - all activities sponsored by Wake County are also completely free! Here are just a few of the activities that went on at Pullen Park this year:

Impy Ink's Face Painting

Let's be honest, face paint is ESSENTIAL for having a fun day out.

Kicking King & Quarrelsome Queen's Crown Decorating

All little learners could join in with dressing up by making their own crown!

Munching Mike's Bean Bag Toss

An opportunity for children to put their throwing skills to the test.

Noisy Nick's Playground

Time to have some fun!

Dippy Duck's Duck Pond

Eyes on the prize - find two matching ducks and you're a winner.

Bouncy Ben's Bubbles

We probably don't need to explain this one... A new activity for 2019, this was a hit with everyone!

Harry Hat Man's History

Another new activity - the City of Raleigh provided a table of artifacts (relating to the city's history) that families could learn about. A great cross-curricular exercise!

Firefighter Fred's Firetruck

The amazing Firemen from the City of Raleigh allowed the children to explore their fire truck. Who wouldn't love that?

Tea with the Queen

All children at Pullen Park had the opportunity to enjoy some cookies and lemonade, and take a picture with Quarrelsome Queen. After tea was finished, Quarrelsome Queen led the Letterland Parade through the park, accompanied by a drumline from Athens Drive High School. Everyone got involved with the parade - even the Superintendent of Wake County Public Schools (and all of the Letterlanders, of course)!

Letterland Passport

This was definitely the most popular activity - and we can see why! Families had either a paper or digital passport, and could go round the park looking for all the Letterlanders. There were large wooden cut-outs of each Letterlander, and when the children found each one they could either get a stamp (for the paper passports) or find a secret word (for the digital passports). This created a super exciting way for the children to explore the park and meet the characters they have been learning about all year!

And finally... Lots of dancing! Children could join the Cha Cha Slide with Clever Cat throughout the day, or just watch the Letterlanders bust some moves.

A HUGE thank you to everyone that makes this event happen every year. It just keeps getting better and better, and we love seeing so many little learners enjoying themselves in a real-life Letterland!
